“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than
the risk it took to blossom.”-Anaïs Nin

Why Pay Out of Pocket?

Did you know there are benefits to paying out of pocket for therapy? Our sliding scale fee structure opens up affordable care alongside these benefits:

  • Freedom. You have the freedom to choose your therapist instead of jumping through hoops of insurance complications, referrals, authorizations and copays.
  • Variety. Counselors are able to work with a wider variety of approaches that may not be available elsewhere. When billing insurance, a limited number of specific approaches are generally used.
  • Time. Insurance typically covers a brief amount of sessions, and people often need more than just a handful of sessions to address their concerns effectively. Many insurance companies don’t cover counseling more than once a week, group sessions or workshops. When paying out of pocket, you gain the liberty to stay in therapy for a longer duration.
  • Insight. Insurance companies only pay to cover certain diagnoses, and we don’t believe people’s challenges always fit into limited categories.  A diagnosis can be unclear and take some time to decipher, so not relying on insurance reimbursement guidelines allows for more accurate and insightful diagnostic formulation.
  • Clean slate. Mental health diagnoses remain on medical records, and though society has come a long way, stereotyping is still a risk. Any diagnosis may follow you. Even an outdated or inaccurate diagnosis can impact future insurance premiums and be considered a pre-existing conditions.
  • Confidentiality. When billing an insurance company, counselors must share aspects of your personal health information and history for billing purposes. Paying out of pocket helps protect your confidentiality.
